Healing Eve: The Woman’s Journey from Religious Fundamentalism to Spiritual Freedom (Ampersand Press: June, 2005)

Healing Eve shows women disillusioned with the toxic world of religious fundamentalism the way to reclamation of meaning, authenticity and joy in their lives. In this practical and inspiring book, author Dr. Jimmy Laura Smull calls upon a combination of first-hand experience, her own original research and common sense to show readers the way out of a life dominated by abusive men and patriarchal systems through their own Healing Eve Process, a three-step journey to spiritual freedom.

Dr. Smull selected her topic for her book because she, too, is a woman who became willing to take on hell, itself, to reclaim her soul. In particular, she took on the toxic teaching that because of Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden, women were doomed for all of eternity with the pain of childbirth, among other curses brought down upon all of humanity. Healing Eve notes, however, that even before her fall, Eve—taken from Adam’s rib--had already been cast in an inferior position to man.

Realizing that she was not alone in her pain, and wondering about the extent of the issue, she followed her curiosity into academia. Earning her doctorate from Saybrook Research and Graduate School in 2000, Dr. Smull was deeply impacted by the work in cultural mythology by her mentor, Dr. Stanley Krippner. She began to articulate the three stages for women she now refers to as The Healing Eve Process.

Healing Eve is the result of her extensive research, including in-depth interviews and/or surveys of 100 women who freed themselves from religious fundamentalism to restore their self-esteem and integrity. The Healing Eve Process detailed in this book is the result of her findings—the first step-by-step guide of its kind for women on the journey from religious fundamentalism to spiritual freedom.
